I suspect that at some point in our lives, we might be victims of very little sleep or not being able to sleep - and #Valerian_root_sleep_aid comes to the rescue or does it?
What Is Valerian Root
Valerian root is a herb which is indigenous to Europe and certain parts of Asia, and it also grows In North America.
A few other names that it can be referred to are: ‘Indian Valerian, Mexican Valerian, Pacific Valerian, Rhizome de Valériane, Tagar, Tagar-Ganthoda, Tagara, Valeriana, Valeriana angustifolia, Valeriana edulis, Valeriana fauriei, Valeriana jatamansii, Valeriana officinalis.’[1]
How Does It Work?
Valerian root sleep aid seems to act like a sedative on the brain and nervous system. The herb can be found in various forms:
- Extract
- Oil (essential oil)
- Capsules and tablets
- Tincture
- Loose leaves (usually used to make tea)
The Uses Of Valerian Root
Here are a few possible issues that you can use Valerian root for. There are some cases where there is not enough clinical/documented evidence but somehow, people still ‘swear by it’. It is often used:
- To help insomnia and other sleep-related disorders.
- It is ingested to treat anxiety and psychological stress – even though there is very little documentation to that effect.
- It can also be used as food flavoring and in beverages with the extracted oil from the plant.
- Help with menopausal symptoms. ‘Research shows that taking 675-1060 mg of Valerian root daily for 8 weeks can reduce the severity and frequency of hot flashes in postmenopausal women.’
- Stress reduction – I personally know someone who is ‘big’ into alternative medicine/alternatives and he ‘swears’ by Valerian root. He says it helps to keep him calm and he takes it religiously. Now, I have to agree with him. When he has not taken it for a few days, he is ‘uber-hyper’ and noticeably different in character.
- Relief of headaches and join pains.
- Can be used as a muscle relaxant.
- Aids with stomach digestion.
Of course, a lot of times, this herb is used in conjunction with other herbs and it is the synergy of each herb that also helps to make a difference. It is often combined with lemon balm leaf extract, St. John’s Wort, and hops, to name a few.
How To Use
The dosage should be regulated by a medical counsel. It depends on the issue being treated, the person’s weight, tolerance level, and the frequency.
Possible Side Effects
Even though Valerian root is a natural herb, there can be side effects or possible allergies as a result of its use. The more common side effects seen:
- Sluggishness
- Upset stomach
- Headache
- Insomnia – yes, as controversial as this might seem, it does the opposite for some people
- Heart discomfort
Naturally, before taking any medication, one should always check with a medical counsel. The dosage is so important because this will determine the help or the compounding of the issue that you might be trying to relieve.
Just recently, I have come across a sleep spray using #Melatonin and #Valerian_Root in its ingredients. I will be trying it out. You can find more information HERE
